mein Freund aus Leipzig kommt. After weil the verb goes to the end: weil mein Freund aus Leipzig kommt.
weil with every person
| person | with sein | with a modal verb | meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | weil ich müde bin | weil ich heute arbeiten muss | because I'm tired; because I have to work today |
| du | weil du müde bist | weil du heute arbeiten musst | because you're tired; because you have to work today (a friend) |
| er/sie/es | weil er müde ist | weil er heute arbeiten muss | because he, she or it is tired; because he has to work today |
| wir | weil wir müde sind | weil wir heute arbeiten müssen | because we're tired; because we have to work today |
| ihr | weil ihr müde seid | weil ihr heute arbeiten müsst | because you're tired; because you have to work today (several friends) |
| sie/Sie | weil sie müde sind | weil sie heute arbeiten müssen | because they're tired; because they have to work today (and Sie, polite you, works the same: weil Sie …) |
The verb at the end changes for the person as usual: bin, bist, ist. With a modal verb the infinitive comes first and the modal verb last: arbeiten muss.
Tip: weil first
A weil clause can start the sentence. Then the whole clause is position 1, and the main clause begins with its verb: Weil ich abends oft müde bin, lerne ich morgens. Two verbs meet at the comma.
- Weil ich abends oft müde bin, lerne ich morgens.
- Weil der Kurs um acht Uhr anfängt, stehe ich früh auf.
- Weil es so viele Endungen gibt, ist die Grammatik schwierig.

Check: after the comma
The weil clause comes first. Choose what follows the comma.
Weil der Kurs um acht Uhr anfängt, ___ früh auf.
ich stehe · stehe ich
Show the answer
stehe ich. The weil clause is position 1, so the verb comes next: stehe ich früh auf.
weil or denn?
weil
weil: the verb goes to the end. A weil clause can come before or after the main clause.
- Ich lerne Deutsch, weil mein Freund aus Leipzig kommt.
- Weil mein Freund aus Leipzig kommt, lerne ich Deutsch.
denn
denn: the normal order, with the verb second. Denn usually stands between the two clauses, like the old-fashioned English 'for'.
- Ich lerne Deutsch, denn mein Freund kommt aus Leipzig.
- Ich bleibe heute zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.
Tip: answering Warum?
In a conversation you can answer Warum? with just a weil clause, as English does with 'Because …'. The verb still goes to the end: Weil ich keine Zeit habe. Denn cannot be used like this.
- Warum lernst du Deutsch? – Weil ich in München studieren möchte.
- Warum bist du so müde? – Weil ich schlecht geschlafen habe.
- Warum kommst du nicht mit? – Weil ich keine Zeit habe.

Word order
- …, weil ich müde bin. weil: verb at the end
- Weil ich müde bin, lerne ich morgens. weil first: verb, comma, verb
- …, denn ich bin müde. denn: verb second
Why it works like this
Ich lerne Deutsch, weil mein Freund aus Leipzig kommt.
Weil means 'because' and starts the reason. A comma always comes before it.
Ich lerne morgens, weil ich abends oft müde bin.
After weil the verb bin goes to the very end.
Weil ich abends oft müde bin, lerne ich morgens.
The weil clause comes first, so the main verb lerne follows straight after the comma.
Ich lerne morgens, denn ich bin abends oft müde.
Denn also gives a reason, but the verb bin stays in second place.
