Check: the strudel

Choose the article for Apfelstrudel.

Heute will ich ___ Apfelstrudel probieren.

der · den · dem

Show the answer

den. Der Apfelstrudel is masculine and the object of probieren, so it is den. Dem is the dative, which comes later.

ein and eine as subject and object

Nominativein Teeeine Torteein StückWaffelnthe subject: who or what does it
Akkusativeinen Teeeine Torteein StückWaffelnthe object: what you want, take or see

Ein becomes einen with masculine nouns. Eine and ein stay the same. A plural has no ein at all: Waffeln.

Every word before a masculine object takes -en: den, einen, meinen, deinen, Ihren. Er becomes ihn, and wer becomes wen. English does the same with he and him, who and whom.

Check: your son

Choose 'your' for Sohn.

Musst du heute ___ Sohn von der Schule holen?

dein · deinen · deine

Show the answer

deinen. Der Sohn is masculine and the object of holen, so dein takes -en: deinen Sohn. Deine is for feminine nouns.

Subject or object?

Nominativ

The subject does the action, or sein describes it: der Tee, wer, er.

  • Der Tee ist heiß.
  • Wer ist das?
  • Er ist sehr gut.

Akkusativ

The object is what you drink, see or take: den Tee, wen, ihn.

  • Ich trinke den Tee.
  • Wen siehst du?
  • Ich nehme ihn.

Tip: the object can come first

German can start with the object, because den shows what it is. The verb is still second, and the subject follows it: Den Apfelstrudel bringe ich sofort. Was can be the object too: Was möchten Sie trinken?

  • Den Apfelstrudel bringe ich sofort.
  • Einen Tee nehme ich auch.
  • Was möchten Sie trinken?

Check: here is …

Choose the article. Look at the verb first.

So, hier ist ___ Kaffee.

der · den

Show the answer

der. Ist is a form of sein, and sein has no object. The coffee is the subject, so it stays der.

On one page

Only masculine changes

  • der Kaffee den Kaffee
  • ein Tee einen Tee
  • mein Sohn meinen Sohn
  • er ihn

No change

  • die Milch feminine
  • das Wasser neuter
  • die Waffeln plural

After sein there is no object, so it is always der: Hier ist der Kaffee.

Why it works like this

  1. Ich möchte einen Kaffee.

What you want is the object of the verb. A masculine object turns ein into einen.

  2. Der Kaffee ist heiß. Ich trinke den Kaffee.

The same coffee has two jobs: first the subject, then the object. Only the article shows it.

  3. Ich möchte eine Cola und ein Wasser.

Feminine and neuter words don't change in the accusative. Only masculine ones do.

  4. Den Apfelstrudel bringe ich sofort.

Because den marks the object, the object can come first. The verb still comes second.
